Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine Receive the Treatment and Care Needed to Get Back on Track through the Physician Health Program

  • The Physician Health Program (PHP) started more than 25 years ago. Since that time, PHP has helped hundreds of physicians suffering from mental health conditions or chemical dependency return to the medical profession.

  • To develop a cooperative relationship with each participant to facilitate their return to health and personal and professional functioning through early identification, intervention and treatment. The PHP strives to provide the best service possible, while assisting healthcare professionals to attain and maintain their optimal health status. It's also an opportunity to ensure all have an avenue to regain and/or maintain their professional licensure.

How It Works

  • The program is not a licensing or disciplinary authority. It accepts referrals from many sources including professional colleagues, hospitals, medical staffs, office staffs, regulatory agencies, attorneys, treatment centers, family and friends.
  • The PHP protects confidentiality and anonymity of program participants and referral sources.

  • Evaluation and treatment begins immediately following an intervention. The PHP will provide treatment resources and coordinate the care of the participant throughout the treatment program. Treatment typically takes place at a facility outside of the participant's normal environment.

  • The Wetzel Foundation administers the PHP and helps supplement the costs of the program, as many participants are without a steady income during this difficult period in their life. The Foundation and MAOPS depend on donations from hospitals, medical staffs, individuals and organizations in order to fund the PHP.

  • MAOPS works cooperatively with the Board of Registration for the Healing Arts and the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
  • The PHP is affiliated with Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Mo., where its administered by addictions specialists and a committee of physicians
