Wetzel Scholar Program - Student Scholarships

Application Window

  • October 1 - December 15
  • Application materials and questions can be submitted to apply@maops.org.

Award

  • $3,000, renewable annually if all requirements are met; with $500 bonus opportunity. Awarded upon completion of required activities.
  • Lodging and registration at the Missouri Osteopathic Annual Convention
  • Recognition at President’s Banquet and on plaque at the MAOPS Central Office
  • Plaque to be presented at COM graduation awards ceremony following OMS IV
  • Interested Scholars successfully completing all requirements will be encouraged to apply for a Wetzel Fellowship during postgraduate training.

 


 

Application Process

  • Completion of the standard Wetzel Scholarship Application
  • Submission of at least one letter of recommendation
  • Finalist(s) will be interviewed by a member(s) of the MAOPS Leadership Development Committee (LDC) (LDC will have final approval authority)

 


 

Renewal Process

 


 

Requirements

 

  • 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year student at a Missouri college of osteopathic medicine
  • Intent to practice in Missouri upon training completion
  • Desire to actively participate in organized medicine activities
  • Academic success
  • Demonstrated leadership ability/skills and commitment to the profession and continued development of leadership skills
  • Completion of required Scholar activities as outlined below (reasonable expenses to be covered by MAOPS)

Complete all of the following annually: (stipend penalties in italics)

  • Maintain academic success
  • Attend the entire Missouri Osteopathic Annual Convention and business meetings ($1,000 first day missed, $500 each subsequent day)
  • Participate in selected events at the conference ($500 per event)
  • Attend at least one Board of Trustees meeting at the MAOPS Central Office during each year (expenses covered by MAOPS) ($1,000)
  • Active communication with assigned mentor.
  • Active membership in the campus MOSA chapter ($500)
  • Review and update MAOPS online member profile ($250)
  • Complete the Wetzel Scholarship Renewal Form annually by December 15 ($3,000)
  • Completion of one task from each of the two categories below: ($1,000 each)
    • Category 1:
      • Serve on at least one MAOPS committee or team
      • Participate as an active blog and/or social media contributor for MAOPS
      • Serve as an officer of the campus MOSA Chapter
      • Attend Missouri Osteopathic Medicine Awareness Day
      • Other prior approved (MAOPS Executive Director) activity
    • Category 2:
      • Attend the AOA House of Delegates with the MAOPS Delegation
      • Attend a national meeting such as COSGP, SOMA, OMED, or one approved by the MAOPS Executive Director and submit a report to the MAOPS Board of Trustees (must cover own expenses)
      • Participate in the MAOPS D.O.c.-A-Day Program
      • Other prior approved (MAOPS Executive Director) activity
  • For an additional $500 stipend bonus, complete one of the following annually: (not eligible for bonus unless ALL above criteria are met)
    • Form a student Fast Action Team and submit a resolution or position paper on a relevant issue to the MAOPS Board of Trustees
    • Organize and implement a campus legislative forum for students
    • Other prior approved (MAOPS Executive Director) activity

Meal and Event Tickets

  • All Missouri Osteopathic Annual Convention attendees will receive tickets for all meals and events upon registration. Additional guests will need to purchase tickets at registration.

Dress Code

  • Business casual or casual except for the President's Banquet, which is semi-formal.
