Wilbur T. Hill, DO, FACOFP dist., Distinguished Service Award

The Wilbur T. Hill, DO, FACOFP, dist., Distinguished Service Award is presented to one physician or individual during years when a worthy candidate exists for meritorious service to MAOPS and the osteopathic profession over a long period of time, as stated in MAOPS bylaws. All physician candidates must be members of MAOPS.

The 2023 Wilbur T. Hill, DO, FACOFP dist., Distinguished Service Award  recipient is Robert C. Scanlon, II, DO. Dr. Scanlon has served as a MAOPS leader for many years, culminating in his service as president in 2013. During his career, Dr. Scanlon served on the MAOPS Board of Trustees, as an AOA delegate, and as a member of nearly every committee. He also led his district, the Ozark district centered in Springfield for many years.

He received the MAOPS Medallion Award for his service in 2008, and was recognized in 2013 by then-AOA President Norman Vinn, DO, as a “Guardian of the Profession.” Before retiring, Dr. Scanlon practiced as a highly regarded urologist in Springfield. He joined MAOPS in 1987 and is now a life member of MAOPS.

During his tenure as president, Dr. Scanlon represented MAOPS at local, state, and national levels with a quiet confidence, earning him the respect of all in the profession. MAOPS Executive Director Brian Bowles described Dr. Scanlon as “one of those people that earns the respect of those around him, rather than commands it. His soft-spoken demeanor and kindness made him ideally suited to serve as President of MAOPS during a time when the organization went through some transformational changes. I could always count on him no matter what.”
