Wetzel Scholarship Renewal

The Wetzel Scholarship Program was created to expose osteopathic students to organized medicine and to develop future leaders for the osteopathic profession. Historically, two students from Missouri osteopathic colleges are awarded scholarships. To view a list of past scholars, click here.

Auto Renewal Process and Scholarship Guidelines

  •  All Wetzel Scholars must reapply for Wetzel Funding by December 15 each year in order to continue to receive funding.
  • Scholars must plan on attending the Missouri Osteopathic Annual Convention (MOAC) annually during medical school and residency. Scholars may be granted a one-time excused absence from attending MOAC without penalty, but will lose scholar status beyond one absence. Any Schoalr unable to attend the conference for any reason must notify the MAOPS Executive Director in writing.
  • Failure to submit the annual renewal request could lead to forfeiture of the Wetzel Scholarship for the year.
  • As long as a scholar continues to meet the obligations of a Wetzel Scholar, funding will be granted throughout training (currently $3,000 for students; $1,000 for residents, plus convention expenses)
  • In order to receive the full stipend, all scholars must plan on attending all mandatory events at the convention. Scholars not attending all mandatory events will not receive the full stipend. Those not attending the conference will not be eligible for the stipend.
  • If a scholar is unable to attend all events at the convention, they may petition the MAOPS Executive Committee at least 45 days prior to the start of the annual meeting. The committee will make a determination as to if they will partially fund the Scholar and how much the stipend will be.

All scholarship stipends will be deposited using electronic funds transfer (EFT) within ten days of the completion of the conference. Scholars should contact Chris Bowles (573-634-3415) at the MAOPS Central Office to provide necessary bank routing information.
