Wetzel Scholar Program - Student Scholarships

Application Window

  • October 1 - December 15
  • Application materials and questions can be submitted to


  • $3,000, renewable annually if all requirements are met; with $500 bonus opportunity. Awarded upon completion of required activities.
  • Lodging and registration at the Midwest Osteopathic Annual Convention.
  • Interested Scholars successfully completing all requirements will be encouraged to apply for a Wetzel Fellowship during postgraduate training.


Application Process

  • Completion of the standard Wetzel Scholarship Application by December 15.
  • Submission of at least one letter of recommendation.
  • Finalist(s) will be interviewed by a member(s) of the MAOPS Leadership Development Committee (LDC) (LDC will have final approval authority).



Renewal Process

  • Completion of all requirements in previous year.
  • Submission of Wetzel Scholarship Renewal Form by December 15 annually.



Annual Requirement Checklist

  • 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year student at a Missouri college of osteopathic medicine.
  • Intent to practice in Missouri upon training completion.
  • Desire to actively participate in organized medicine activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability/skills and commitment to the profession and continued development of leadership skills.
  • Completion of required Scholar activities as outlined below (reasonable expenses to be covered by MAOPS).

Complete all of the following annually: (stipend penalties in italics)

  • Maintain academic success as verified by the Dean.
  • Attend the entire Midwest Osteopathic Annual Convention and business meetings ($1,000 first day missed, $500 each subsequent day).
  • Participate in Board selected events at the conference including moderating and/or presenting educational sessions ($500 per event).
  • Attend all Board of Trustees meeting at the MAOPS Central Office, either in person or virtually (expenses covered by MAOPS) ($1,000).
  • Active communication with assigned mentor.
  • Active membership in the MAOPS COM campus chapter ($500).
  • Review and update MAOPS online member profile ($250).
  • Complete the Wetzel Scholarship Renewal Form annually by December 15 ($3,000).
  • Completion of one task from each of the two categories below: ($1,000 each)
    • Category 1:
      • Serve on at least one MAOPS committee or team.
      • Participate as an active blog and/or social media contributor for MAOPS.
      • Serve as an officer of the MAOPS COM campus chapter.
      • Attend MAOPS Advocacy Day Activities. 
      • Other preapproved activity by the MAOPS Leadership Development Committee.
    • Category 2:
      • Attend the AOA House of Delegates with the MAOPS Delegation.
      • Attend a preapproved state or national leadership conference and submit a report to the MAOPS Board of Trustees.
      • Participate in the MAOPS D.O.c.-A-Day Program.
      • Other preapproved activity by the MAOPS Leadership Development Committee.
  • For an additional $500 stipend bonus, complete one of the following annually: (not eligible for bonus unless ALL above criteria are met)
    • Form a student Fast Action Team and submit a resolution or position paper on a relevant issue to the MAOPS Board of Trustees.
    • Organize and implement a campus legislative forum for students.
    • Other preapproved activity by the MAOPS Leadership Development Committee.
