Wetzel Fellowship Program - Postgraduates

Application Window

  • Applications can be submitted year-round,but are reviewed in January, April and August.
  • Request application materials and submit questions to




  • All expenses, within reason, will be paid for activities related to completion of the Wetzel Fellowship.
  • $5,000 upon completion of the Wetzel Fellowship requirements, plus $10,000 upon establishment of permanent, full-time practice in the state of Missouri.
  • Wetzel Fellows will receive a plaque commemorating their achievement.
  • Wetzel Fellows will be recognized on a plaque at the MAOPS Central Office upon completion of the Wetzel Fellowship Program.


Application Process

  • Completion of the standard Wetzel Fellowship Application.
  • Submission of two letters of recommendation from:
    • Postgraduate program director (4th year medical students should apply only after program selection)
  • MAOPS postgraduate membership is required. 
  • Interview with the MAOPS Leadership Development Committee (LDC).



Annual Requirement Checklist

  • Osteopathic postgraduate physician with intent to practice in Missouri.
  • Each Wetzel Fellow will have three years to complete the program requirements at their own pace. However, discernible progress must be made each year once the program is started.

Complete all of the following annually:

  • Attendance at the entire Midwest Osteopathic Annual Convention and business meetings.
  • Participate in MAOPS Board of Trustees-selected events at the conference, including moderating and/or presenting educational sessions.
  • Attend all MAOPS Board of Trustees meeting held at the MAOPS Central Office.
  • Actively participate on the MAOPS Legislative Committee.
  • Review and update MAOPS online member profile annually.
  • Active communication with assigned mentor.                                                                                                     

Each candidate must complete each of the following within three years of beginning the Wetzel Fellowship Program (reasonable expenses will be paid by MAOPS):

  • Participation in the MAOPS D.O.c.-A-Day Program.
  • Run for the MAOPS Postgraduate Board of Trustees seat, and serve as expected if elected.
  • Attendance at the AOA House of Delegates.
  • Coordinate and co-host a MAOPS student and/or postgraduate dinner.
  • Actively serve as a member of the MAOPS Education and Convention Committee.
  • Write a position paper or resolution on a topic of interest/need to be considered for approval by the MAOPS Board of Trustees, or execute a fast action team as directed by the MAOPS President.
  • Attend the AOA LEAD or similar approved leadership development event.
  • Produce content for the MAOPS blog, social media and/or websites.
